BEYOND THE GATES: Martin Considers Running for President While Smitty Wants to Return to Reporting; A Recipe for Disaster?
On the Wednesday, March 5th episode of Beyond the Gates, we already know that husbands, Martin (Brandon Claybon) and Smitty (Mike Manning) have some major unrest, and secrets within their relationship. Martin has been having nightmares while Vernon (Clifton Davis) and Anita (Tamara Tunie) are covering up what many suspect is some kind of shooting or murder he was involved with that could ruin his political aspirations.
Smitty has been feeling ignored after raising two teenagers, and wants to get back to doing something with his life, after being an ace political reporter. There are also some secrets viewers surmise Smitty is harboring. Well, things are going to get a lot more complicated.
After Martin and Smitty play some basketball, they arrive for a Richardson family breakfast. Just then, Martin gets a call from the press asking for a quote about Dani Dupree’s (Karla Mosley) antics at Bill (Kyle Timon Durrett) and Hayley’s (Marquita Goings) nuptials which the Dupree family is trying to sweep under the rug. As an experienced reporter, Smitty tells Martin the press are not going to let up on this story where Dani pulled gun at the wedding, as he wouldn’t. A glib Martin is confident that another scandal in Washington D.C. will arise that will take Dani’s drama off the front page news.
After Martin steps away, Nicole (Daphnee Duplaix) has some alone time to catch-up with her son-in-law, Smitty. He tells her that the time is coming soon that he and Martin will be empty nesters and he’s already beginning to feel a bit lost of what to do next with his life and to fill up his time. Nicole suggests if he would want to join Martin’s political team. Smitty thinks it’s a bad idea for them to work together for the sake of their relationship.
Next, Smitty reveals to Nicole that he reached out to some former colleagues and is interested in getting back into reporting. Nicole wonders how Martin feels about it, and Smitty admits he has not discussed it with him yet, as Martin eavesdrops on the conversation.
When Martin comes back to the breakfast table, Smitty says he has to head off to a parent committee meeting. It’s at that point, that Martin tells his mother he has been considering his next political move and his aspirations. He wants her to be the first to know that he is considering running for President. They hug.
