Exiting Beyond the Gates Star Calls ‘BS’ On Rumors That He Was Fired Over Tension With Leading Lady
From day one, Beyond the Gates struck as the most soaptastic of soaps. And now daytime’s newest drama is partaking of another tradition of the serial genre: recasting. (Review the best switcheroos ever here.) Maurice Johnson, who plays Nicole’s husband Ted, is being replaced by Keith D. Robinson, our sister site Deadline reports.
When another site floated a rumor that Johnson had been let go because he didn’t get along with leading lady Daphnée Duplaix or because the powers that be weren’t satisfied with his performance, he shut that [bleep] right down. “From the horse’s mouth… neither are true, so whoever [the writer of the story] is didn’t get this from CBS or my co-star. Please don’t spread BS that someone pulled out of the air.”
Honestly, if you’d asked us, Johnson wouldn’t have been the first actor we’d have subbed out or even one that we’d have replaced at all. Although Beyond the Gates is blessed with an enviable lineup — including standouts Karla Mosley (Dani), Marquita Goings (Hayley) and Ambyr Michelle (Eva) — there are a couple of, let’s say, weaker performers.
Plus, Johnson was up to his turtleneck in storyline. Ted’s vindictive ex-lover Dana/Leslie is hellbent on sticking it to him — and is pointing in his direction Eva, the daughter he doesn’t know is his daughter, like a loaded weapon. At least the actor seemed in good spirits about the reversal of fortune. “Sorry, Beyond the Gates fans. You’ll have 30+ more episodes to see if Dr. Ted ever goes shirtless,” he teased. “Thanks for the love and blowing the internet up over the weekend about ya boy!”
When recast Robinson makes his debut, you’re likely to recognize the actor right off. Among his mile-long list of credits are a slew of Christmas movies (including two Sister Swaps), the third thriller in the Mimic series and the role of Bill Cosby in the 2004 Fat Albert flick starring Kenan Thompson.
