Berto had been living in Costa Rica for nine years because he opened a hotel there. She has an atypical mother-daughter relationship with her daughter. Sophie has seen Shekinah going through challenges in her past relationships. Shekinah doesn’t like sugarcoating things with her daughter. Shekinah told Berto that she would be coming back to America every five weeks during Sophie’s boarding school breaks to meet her.
